Welcome to English 1200, a first-year research-writing course at East Carolina University. This course is the second in a two-semester series of first-year composition courses designed to prepare students for the writing expectations of the academy, the workplace, and their communities.

This course is taught by ECU English Department faculty member Stephanie West-Puckett and incorporates service-learning as a teaching method that gives students the opportunity to explore subcultures through primary research, examine significant issues affecting those subcultures through both primary and secondary research, and engage in real-world research-writing activities that serve a need in those communities.

I am extremely excited to begin our service learning projects. I had Mrs. West-Puckett last semester and specifically requested her again as my english 1200 teacher because i throughly enjoyed my english 1100 service project. I think that service learning is very important and a great educational tool. Last semester i serviced an afterschool program called Building Hope which many of yall, my fellow class mates, have choosen to service. I will be the first but not the last to tell you that it is a blast working with those students! They are all wonderful and full of character! Although i did highly enjoy my time at Building Hope i have choosen to work with a different population of the community. Red Oak retirement community is where i have choosen to do my service, hopefully if they have necessary means. I think it should be very interesting and I can't wait to begin my service! I enjoy the elderly population so hopefully things will work out with Red Oak. I hope yall as well enjoy your service projects!
Do you find this valuable?
