30 minutes Silent Activity*

Read White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack by Peggy McIntosh, the Associate Director of the Wellesley College Center for Research on Women, founder and co-director of the National S.E.E.D. (Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity) Project on Inclusive Curriculum. A world-renowned lecturer, she consults with higher education institution throughout the United States and the world on creating multi-cultural and gender-fair curricula. * Unless an emergency arrises, you must use this time for silent, sustained reading. Students who engage in interruptive behavior will be asked to leave the class and may not return until conferring with the instructor. Absences will acrue and class participation grades will plummet. No warnings.

Blog Responses
Once you have finished the reading, look over other's blog posts to find a classmate's writing about the M&M Activity. Using White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack, write a response to their blog post. How does the reading connect to their post? In your response, you may want to touch on what surprises you about the McIntosh reading, the M&M activity, and their response to it. What do you find significant in the essay and their response? What words and phrases are drawn to? Do you think the M&M activity is a good simulation to illustrate the baggage we carry in our cultural knapsacks? Why or why not? How would you construct your own simulation demonstrate the concept of privilege? Revise and proofread your response so that it is organized, coherent, easy to read and uses McIntosh's essay as a basis for the response. This is your blog response for this week.
