Due in Class Wednesday, April 9, 2008This is a featured page

Complete artifact analysis and post to Service-Learning Quilt page. Specific instructions for writing and posting can be found on yesterday's daybook prompt page. Remember this writing is a stand-alone genre to be part of the S-L values quilt, and, with a bit of tweaking, it is also a key element of your ethnography.

In Fieldworking, read Chapter 4, pp.175-177, pp.182 (starting at Box 15)-189, pp. 194-205. Also browse over Karen downings portfolio materials on pp. 221-230 as you should be amassing similar materials that represent the process approach to your ethnographic writings to include in your MGRP.

Bring your fieldnotes and favorite art supplies to class on Wednesday as you will complete Box 17 (mapping) and Box 16 (verbal snapshot) as in-class activities.

The organization that I am working with is Strive, it is a nonprofit organization that works with commmunity members that are unable to find and or keep successful jobs. They teach them basic life skills such as respect, responsiblity, organization and others that are important for impressing employers. The artifact that I chose was the Attitude Adjustment box. There is a list of rules and regulations that have a fine for every time each is broken. For example $5.00 for every time you are caught sleeping or if you loose your name tag, $1.00 for lying, gum chewing, candy consumption, or cursing and $.50 for being late or sucking teeth. Every time a student at strive is caught doing one of these things you have to put the appropriate amount of money in the attitude adjustment box.
The purpose of this is to teach the students to be responsible and to have respect for themselves, others and their employers. It shows that the people that teach and work at strive really emphasize the importance of respect and responsibility. And it shows that the people that it is used for are unaware of the skills and functions that most people grow up knowing. It also shows that the teachers really do care about the students impoving and are more interactive about it and dont just scold them for breaking the rules they make it so they will remember the rules after they leave strive and go out and get jobs.
We are observing the organization in order to get a better idea of why so many people in the community cannot find and or keep successful jobs, this is a perfect example of why people need help getting jobs. The system teaches the students how to act in order to impress employers in order to get a good job.
Do you find this valuable?
