Mama day was a really interesting story. I did not understand it very much but it still kept my interest. There are a lot of details and certain lines from the story are very descriptive and it is almost as if you are in the story. The " 18 & 23" threw me off and i was not sure what to think of it. I realized it had something to do with when she the year 1823 and all of the events that occurred dealing with Bascombe Wade. "18 & 23" is used quite a bit in the story referring to many different things which makes it even more confusing trying to figure out what it means. An example of that is " laughing at the antics of little dark boys who got the nerve to be "breathing 18&23" with mothers milk still on their tongues." Another neat thing about the story is the character of Sapphira because she is such a strong character and does what she needs to do. I am not sure about the releationship between Sapphira and Bascombe I could not quite figure that out. Overall, Mama Day was a very neat and interesting story that was an easy read it i s just a little confusing.

Wow this was a great story. I love the dialect that was used. Depending on how vivid your imagination is you can really place yourself there and you can actually hear the words being spoken. In my mind I hear a black woman telling the story with her southern accent. I must admit the story was confusing. As I was reading I kept asking myself what is "18 & 23", what is "18 & 23". Then when I got to line that said " Sapphira was African born, Bascombe Wade was from Norway, and it was the 18 & 23'ing that went down between them two put deeds in our hands," I thought it meant sex. But it's used differently throughout the whole story. It was also used to describe little girls' braids. It still throws me. Sapphira seemed to be a pretty tough woman. She kind of put me in the mind of Sojourner Truth. None of this happened to her but she was a strong, tough woman like Sapphira. Leading the Underground Railroad and leading all those slaves to freedom she had to be strong and tough. This was a great read.
