Continue reading Chapter 1 in Fieldworking. You should have read all of Chapter 1 by Monday, February 4 as well as completed Box 1 on p. 6 and Box 2 on p. 15.

To complete Box 1, make a list of at least 5 subcultures to which you belong and their corresponding rituals, insider phrases,behaviors, and values. Then, in your daybook, write with an "insider's perspective" to create a flash-essay (either satirically or seriously) of two to three paragraphs about one of those subcultures you are a part of, giving your classmates an insider guide to that subculture.

Next, using Nacirema (p.10) as a model, complete the activity in Box 2 (p.15) by choosing one of the rituals you described for the previous activity and reexamining that ordinary routine as if you were an outsider, seeing it for the first time. List the specific behaviors you would engage in and write another paragraph to describe that process from an outsider perspective, making the familiar seem strange and unfamiliar to your classmates.

You'll share your responses in class on Monday. This assignment is also a great one to include in your blog for this week.
